Cherishing the Gifts of Failure

All of us have experience with failure from time to time, and it is easy to feel negative when we are failing.  It is uncomfortable in this space, much as it is when we are growing.

Think of a child learning to ride a bike - it hurts to fall or crash on your bike!  With teens who are learning to drive right now, I can see their discomfort - and their bravery in their little test-drives.  There is a little bit of apprehension or fear with little failures.  But they remain excited and they persist as they push forward to obtaining their license..

-Or think of taking your first dive off of a high diving board.  Oh, the sickening feeling in the pit of your stomach just moments before your toes grip the edge of the board and you think about leaving the safety of the board!  Maybe your fear overwhelms you, and with a knot in your stomach, a racing heart, and sweaty palms, you retreat and back down the board....down the ladder..... shrinking in the feeling of failure.  In those moments, you sulk, you hear your self-talk....maybe berating yourself.  Perhaps, after you pull yourself together, you feel an urge to prove yourself!  You build your resolve as your self-talk affirms your ability.  You recall prior success or you consider others you know who have succeeded.  You climb again and strengthen your resolve. You hold your breath and take a leap --- and then the rush of triumph sweeps over you as you emerge from the pool.

You just did something truly amazing!  You did something you have never done before, and you succeeded.  Now you know you CAN.

Failure is the seed of future success.  Failure is pregnant with the very gifts we need to grow into our next, and better self.  Just as we build muscle in the gym through muscle failure, so do we build or personal selves through failures.

As I contemplate moments of strain or failures in different situations, I can attribute some of my most cherished gifts to these moments.

Consider a few GIFTS obtained through Failure:

1)  Confidence
2)  Hunger and Increased Drive
3)  Humility
4)  Patience
5)  Experience in self - control over our beliefs, self-talk and emotional state
6) Empathy
7) Courage through Faith
8)  Belief
9) Experience
10) Increased sense of Persistence in our Purpose

As you embrace these gifts of failure with gratitude, you will drive fear away.  You are more likely to think clearly, you will be more creative and even magnetic for the very things you desire.  In this state, you are more open and able to receive the gifts that failure brings.  You are more likely to emerge a bigger, better, and brighter version of yourself.

I challenge you to fail FORWARD to success, to growth, to the next level!

I believe in YOU!

The Power of Curiosity

There is great power in being curious. Curiosity differs from que
stioning. Whereas questioning something can sometimes imply doubt and trigger the need to defend oneself; being curious implies an openness, a desire to unfold and discover - without judgment.

Now that you have identified your top 1-3 (no more than 3) areas you want to improve or build, you can employ the power of curiosity to help you uncover the best strategies for success in your quest!

A few questions to help you get started - by no means is this exhaustive:

  • “I wonder how I could use my talents and resources to add this extra income each month?”

  • “How do people in my situation find the time to exercise and eat healthily?

  • “If I was to quit smoking - how would I do it?”

Interestingly, you don’t have to know the answers! But in asking the RIGHT questions, you will bring into play the power of your subconscious mind….that eternally wise part of yourself that never sleeps; it will go to work to find the answers, to explore the options, make the right connections and help you uncover all the possibilities that will make your success inevitable.

Notice how the above questions, birthed in a state of curiosity, differ from these questions:

  • “Why is there never enough money at the end of the month?”

  • “How will I ever get ahead?”

  • “Why can’t I lose weight?”

  • “Why can’t I quit smoking?”

Are the above really questions at all? With their judgmental undertones, they are sure to put a girdle on your potential for success and actually push your success away.

So, now that you know WHAT you want to tackle, sit down and craft 3 power questions for each area - remember to be curious!

We’ll talk about planning — next time!

I believe in you - a squillion percent!

There Are No Shortcuts...

Whether it’s your health, your relationships, your career, your finances - even your emotional well-being - there are not tricks, hacks or shortcuts to getting them to their peak state. If there were, that diet pill would have worked - forever. The Jackpot winner would still be independently wealthy, and on and on.

Anything worth having or holding onto takes work — and that work it takes to obtain is the same ‘stuff’ that will help you hold onto that success. It’s the very stuff that creates hardiness and character. Think of people who you admire and look up to; chances are they didn’t ‘luck out’ or have all the breaks. Chances are those folks who we really admire are also the folks with the callouses of the laborer…whether they be physical or other callouses.

Is there something in life that you feel is ‘missing?’ Something out there that you want - but can’t quite put your finger on it? A great exercise to get your started on your own path to success is to take a personal inventory on your level of satisfaction in each area of your life. On a scale of 1 - 10, where 1 is the least satisfied/happy and 10 is completely satisfied/happy, rate your level:

Physical:

Emotional;

Financial:

Career:

Relationships:

Spiritual:

This can help you identify where you are right now. The next step is to ask yourself: if you could change/improve just one of these areas — one area that would make the biggest difference … the biggest improvement… what one area would that be?

It’s critical that in this first phase of discovery, that you don’t get caught up in the ‘how.' Worrying about what to do or how to affect a change will thwart your success here. This first phase - there are no limits. Just identify one area that if you were to have a change or improvement - it would make the biggest impact on your happiness and satisfaction.

We’ll talk about the “How” - next time.

Until then, I believe in YOU!

August Newsletter ~ Inflammation & Kidney Health

Inflammation and Kidney Health

Inflammation is very prevalent in our society today.  Hectic schedules, multiple and often burdensome demands on our time and energy, poor diets, more sedentary lifestyles, increased pollution, economic factors, relationship issues, smoking, poor sleep or lack of sleep, and the list goes on….

These are just some of the factors that set up a prime environment for inflammation; add to that conditions like Diabetes, Hypertension (high blood pressure), High Cholesterol, Heart Disease and it’s just a matter of time before something is going to happen.

Inflammation has been linked to a host of ailments including cancer, heart disease, autoimmune disorders, allergies, digestion and stomach problems, skin issues, neurological disorders and even Alzheimer’s Disease. In fact, some studies show inflammation, persistent inflammation, to be a main factor in Renal (kidney) Disease (Afsar, B., Turkmen, K., Covic, A., & Kanbay, M. (2014). An Update on Coronary Artery Disease and Chronic Kidney Disease. International Journal of Nephrology2014, 767424. http://doi.org/10.1155/2014/767424)    and https://www.intechopen.com/books/chronic-kidney-disease-from-pathophysiology-to-clinical-improvements/inflammation-and-chronic-kidney-disease-current-approaches-and-recent-advances

So let’s talk about how you can put out the inflammation fire and reduce your risk for health issues and improve your well-being.

Reduce Stress

It is important to note, that if you are tempted to say that you are not stressed, consider that you may have just become so accustomed to a steady high-stress state, that you don’t notice it!

The good news is that you can make it better, right now!  Here are some great tips:

BREATHE! – Deep-Breathing actually helps you make more of a natural chemical in your body that induces relaxation, dilates blood vessels and can lower blood pressure.

MEDITATION!  - taking a time out can help you to relax, improve circulation, and re-charge.

TAKE A NAP!  - even a quick 10-15 minute power nap can give you a great boost, and can sometimes even help you sleep better.

TAKE A WALK!  – outside when/where possible! – Exercise helps your whole body!  Gives stress hormones a good exit, improves circulation, and can help improve sleep.  Exposing yourself to some natural light is a great mood booster too!

LEARN TO SAY NO! – if you find yourself saying that you don’t have time to take care of yourself, then it’s time to cut back on some things – even good things – so that you have more room to do the BEST things

EAT HEALTY!  If you find yourself reaching for quick junk or fast food, energy drinks or sodas, your body is trying to tell you that it needs.

ENERGY!   You wouldn’t put cheap gas in a Ferrari – why put cheap food in your body?!  You’ll feel better, have more energy, and decrease your risk for a host of health problems when you drink plenty of WATER and learn to eat right. – say NO to junk!
